On October 3,
1962,
the Speedmaster CK 2998 became the first OMEGA watch worn in space,
when astronaut Walter Schirra wore his personal model on the Sigma 7 mission of the Mercury program. This updated version pays tribute to that pioneering watch and recreates the same 2nd-generation Speedmaster style in a modern form. The 39.70 mm case is crafted in polished and brushed stainless steel and comes on a black leather strap with a stainless steel buckle. The bezel ring is presented in black aluminum and includes the legendary tachymeter scale with the iconic “dot over ninety.” Beneath the newly shaped sapphire crystal that resembles hesalite,
the gray-blue dial has a CVD coating
to reproduce the tone of some CK 2998 watches produced in the 1960s. Along with the Alpha hour and minute hands, filled with vintage Super-LumiNova,
the central Baton seconds hand is lacquered white to match the printed markings. The subdials include a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock,
a 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock
and a small seconds dial at 9 o’clock. A vintage OMEGA logo is applied to the dial,
as well as to the crown,
while the caseback bears the famous hippocampus medallion
and the engravings
“THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE” and “3 OCTOBER
1962”. The watch is powered by the Caliber Co-Axial Master Chronometer 3861,
which is the most up-to-date version of the Caliber 321 used by astronauts in space. Each watch is delivered in a special presentation box, with a leaflet titled “LEGENDARY MOONWATCH” inside.
