On October 3,
1962,
the Speedmaster CK 2998 became the first OMEGA watch to be worn in space,
when astronaut Wally Schirra wore his personal model on the Mercury Sigma 7 mission. This updated version pays homage to that pioneering watch and recreates the same 2nd‑generation Speedmaster style in a modern form. The 39.70 mm case is made of polished and brushed stainless steel and features a bracelet with “flat links” and OMEGA’s patented Comfort Release adjustment system. The bezel ring is black aluminum and includes the legendary tachymeter scale with the iconic “dot over ninety.” Under the brand‑new sapphire crystal shaped to resemble hesalite,
the bluish-gray dial has a CVD coating
to reproduce the tone of some CK 2998 watches produced in the 1960s. Along with the “Alpha” hour/minute hands and indices filled with vintage Super-LumiNova,
the central “Baton” seconds hand is lacquered white to match the transferred markings. The subdials include a 30‑minute counter at 3 o’clock,
a 12‑hour counter at 6 o’clock
and a small seconds dial at 9 o’clock. A vintage OMEGA logo is applied to the dial,
as well as on the crown,
while the caseback displays the famous Seahorse medallion
and the engravings
“THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE” and “3 OCTOBER
1962”. The watch is powered by the Caliber Co‑Axial Master Chronometer 3861,
which is the most updated version of the Caliber 321 used by astronauts in space. Each watch is delivered in a special presentation box, with a booklet titled “LEGENDARY MOONWATCH” inside.
